What is Symprove?
Symprove is a unique water-based supplement which contains live bacteria in a barley extract, working to support the microbiome in the gut. It contains four strains of live activated bacteria. Because of this unique formulation Symprove will not trigger digestion, meaning the bacteria are able to:
- Arrive to the gut unharmed and in full strength.
- Survive the harsh acidic environment of the stomach.
- Thrive in the gut to colonise successfully.
The balance of bacteria within the gut is vitally important, and there are various ways to address an imbalance to support health and wellbeing, including bacteria-based food supplements such as Symprove.
Many people with Parkinson’s experience digestion problems, which can impact the effectiveness of medications as well as overall wellbeing. But good gut health is not just for those living with Parkinson's, it’s important for everyone.
What is your microbiome?
Your microbiome contains billions of bacteria working hard to support your gut health. More and more people are becoming aware that the balance of bacteria within your gut is vitally important for the performance of your entire system.
So, what do our microbiomes consist of? Each of us are different. Babies exist in the womb in a sterile state, but once they are born are exposed to bacteria – so a person’s first contact with microbes is through the birth canal, or from the environment around them as they are born. Genetics also plays its part in forming the unique microbiomes that we all have inside us.
The makeup of your microbiome can shift throughout your life, and changes in lifestyle can impact it hugely. Things like diet play a big part, for instance, but also other lifestyle factors such as medication can be key. Use of antibiotics is one example as they not only kill harmful bacteria, but also deplete good bacteria at the same time. Infections can impact the diversity of the gut microbiome too.
There are various ways that we can look to address gut imbalance as part of a crucial bid to support overall health and wellbeing. A diverse, nutritious diet, regular exercise and stress management are some examples of tools we can use. There is also the option of bacteria-based food supplements.
Using bacteria to boost your microbiome can increase production of short-chain fatty acids (the building blocks/food for the microbiome) which in turn stimulate good bacteria within your system. Short-chain fatty acids have an important role in the maintenance of health overall.

How long should I take Symprove?
Symprove is to be taken daily. It comes in packs of four x 500ml bottles, and each bottle will last 7-8 days. The 12-week programme will consist of three four-packs, a total of 12 bottles. Symprove recommend taking the supplement for 12 weeks, as that is how long it takes to initially re-set the gut bacteria balance.
Each morning, on an empty stomach, take a 70ml dose using the cup provided in the box, and wait a minimum of ten minutes before eating or drinking anything.
If you purchase all 12 bottles in one go, please ensure you start your 12-week programme straightaway because of the shelf-life of the product.
A minority of people report some ups and downs as their bodies adjust to the Symprove bacteria. This is perfectly normal so don’t be alarmed and continue to take Symprove daily. Most people report a positive feeling within the first few weeks, although it can take longer.
